I probably needed a little bit more advanced lesson in PDFs, but this would be great for a beginner.

I think the time allotted could have been a little longer. It seemed like he was rushing near the end. Our group had questions, which made it run even longer. A 90 minute webinar may be more appropriate, to give him time to get through everything and then also have time for questions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Professionals who move beyond basic PDF viewing and printing unlock capabilities that dramatically expand how they create, edit, and use PDF documents. Adobe Acrobat's advanced document tools include the ability to compare two PDF versions to identify changes—invaluable for contract review and document version management. Rich media embedding allows PDFs to include audio, video, and interactive buttons, transforming static documents into engaging training materials and presentations. Measurement tools—distance, perimeter, and area—enable accurate measurements directly on architectural drawings, site plans, and engineering documents without specialized CAD software. Creating interactive forms from Word documents—complete with text fields, checkboxes, radio buttons, dropdown menus, and digital signature fields—eliminates paper-based data collection. Distributing forms for electronic completion and aggregating responses saves significant administrative time. Understanding PDF accessibility—including how to test for and remediate ADA compliance—is increasingly important for compliance. Digital signature creation and certificate management enable secure, legally binding document signing. Aurora Training Advantage's Advanced PDF Techniques webinar with Microsoft Certified Trainer Tom Fragale covers all of these capabilities in a comprehensive 60-minute on-demand session.
Converting a Word document into an interactive PDF form is a streamlined process in Adobe Acrobat that replaces manual paper forms with professional, fillable digital documents. Begin by creating the form layout in Microsoft Word, using tables and text labels to establish the visual structure. Save and export the document as a PDF. In Adobe Acrobat, open the PDF and select Tools > Prepare Form. Acrobat automatically detects form fields based on the document layout and places interactive fields at likely input locations—though manual adjustment is typically needed. Form elements can be added or refined: text fields for open input, checkboxes for binary choices, radio buttons for mutually exclusive options, dropdown lists for predefined selections, and date fields for calendar input. Digital signature fields enable legally binding e-signatures. Form field properties control validation rules, required fields, tab order, and tooltip text that guides users. Once complete, forms can be distributed via email or a shared link, with responses aggregated automatically. Aurora Training Advantage's Advanced PDF Techniques webinar with Tom Fragale provides step-by-step guidance on building professional, interactive PDF forms for business use.
Digital signatures in PDF documents provide a legally recognized, cryptographically secure method of signing and authenticating documents without printing, handwriting, or scanning. A digital signature uses a certificate-based digital ID—issued by a trusted certificate authority or created within Adobe Acrobat for internal use—that verifies the signer's identity and records the time and state of the document at the moment of signing. Once a document is digitally signed, any subsequent changes invalidate the signature, providing tamper evidence. This makes digital signatures appropriate for contracts, approvals, compliance documents, and any record where authenticity and integrity are important. Electronic signatures (a broader category that includes typed names and drawn signatures) are legally valid for most commercial purposes in the U.S. under the ESIGN Act and UETA; digital certificate-based signatures provide a higher level of assurance and are required in some regulated industries. Adobe Acrobat allows users to create a self-signed certificate for internal use or connect to a trusted certificate authority. Aurora Training Advantage's Advanced PDF Techniques webinar covers digital signature creation, certificate management, and how to add signature fields to PDF documents for professional and legal use cases.
The PDF document comparison feature in Adobe Acrobat is an essential tool for contract managers, legal professionals, and anyone who regularly works with revised document versions. To compare two PDFs, open Acrobat and select Tools > Compare Files, then designate the older and newer versions. Acrobat analyzes both documents and produces a detailed comparison report highlighting insertions, deletions, moved content, and formatting changes—displayed side-by-side with changes marked in the document and summarized in a panel. Text changes are clearly distinguished from image or formatting changes. The comparison results can be filtered by change type and saved as a separate PDF for documentation or distribution. This feature eliminates the time-consuming manual review required to find changes in lengthy documents and reduces the risk of missing critical alterations in legal agreements, policy documents, and technical specifications. It is particularly valuable in contract negotiations where multiple redlined versions circulate between parties. Aurora Training Advantage's Advanced PDF Techniques webinar with Tom Fragale covers document comparison alongside other advanced tools that make PDF work faster, more accurate, and more professional.
Scanned PDFs begin as image files that cannot be searched, edited, or made accessible without additional processing—a significant limitation for organizations digitizing paper records. The most important enhancement is Optical Character Recognition (OCR), which analyzes the scanned image and converts it to searchable, selectable text. In Adobe Acrobat, this is done via Tools > Scan & OCR > Recognize Text, which processes the document and embeds a text layer behind the original scan. OCR quality improves significantly when the original scan is at 300 DPI or higher. After OCR, scan enhancement tools correct common quality issues: deskewing straightens tilted pages, despeckling removes noise and artifacts, and background removal improves contrast and readability. Enhanced scans are not only more usable but also smaller in file size. Once text is recognized, accessibility remediation—adding tags, reading order, and alt text—can be applied to make the document screen-reader compatible for ADA compliance. Aurora Training Advantage's Advanced PDF Techniques webinar with Tom Fragale covers scan enhancement, OCR, and accessibility testing as part of a comprehensive PDF skills curriculum for business professionals.
