The research is very clear. Over the past two decades, organizations have significantly redefined the roles of senior-level leaders, particularly those in the C-Suite. While traditional capabilities such as excellence in performing operational tasks still remain relevant, one qualification is now valued above all others and that is STRONG SOCIAL SKILLS, specifically communication skills.

To be successful, executive leaders must spend a significant amount of time interacting with others, communicating information, facilitating the exchange of ideas, creating psychological safety, and managing conflict. All of this is best done by leaders with strong communication skills.

During this communication master class facilitated by communication and leadership skills expert Pamela Jett, you as a senior-level leader will:

  • Discover why communication is the most important social skill you can polish.
  • Master the art of communicating assertively (not aggressively or passively) in a variety of situations, including challenging ones such as conflict.
  • Uncover your leadership communication approach with a powerful assessment.
  • Maximize your ability to create a psychologically safe culture by knowing the words to choose and the words to lose.
  • Eliminate sneaky communication habits that may sabotage your leadership success.
  • Leverage the art of power questions to get better results.
  • Master the art of active listening to create a culture of teamwork and cooperation.
  • Learn common communication pitfalls and how to avoid them.
  • Discover the 3 keys to Relentlessly Positive communication and how to use those keys for better results when giving feedback, navigating difficult conversations, motivating others, and many other leadership situations.
  • Create a personal action plan to take your communication skills to the next level.

More than just feel-good fluff or theory, this master class is loaded with communication strategies, templates, and other tools you can use immediately to become the kind of communicator and leader that others want to work with and for.

I enjoyed the class, but I thought requiring us to use a QR code for the Assertive Assessment form and text a number to receive the Power Questions sheet was excessive. They should have been provided with the other course materials instead of forcing us to give out our phone and email address.

I think it would be helpful to send the presenter's note or a written outline with the presentation slide. With this presenter you cannot review the content of the presentation from the slides so the transcript would be very helpful to have to reinforce the topic.

Frequently Asked Questions

Research over the past two decades has consistently identified strong social and communication skills as the most valued qualification for senior leaders—surpassing even technical excellence in many organizational contexts. C-suite executives spend the majority of their time interacting with others: communicating strategy, facilitating idea exchange, managing conflict, building alignment, and creating the organizational culture that enables performance. The most critical communication skills for senior leaders include assertive communication—the ability to express ideas and perspectives clearly and confidently without aggression or passivity. Creating psychological safety through deliberate word choice and listening behavior enables direct reports to speak up, innovate, and surface problems early. Active listening builds trust and surfaces insights that would otherwise never reach the leader. Asking powerful, exploratory questions drives better thinking and problem-solving across teams. Managing difficult conversations with clarity and empathy prevents small issues from becoming cultural toxins. Giving feedback that is specific, behavioral, and developmental sustains performance over time. Aurora Training Advantage's Communication Skills Master Class, taught by Pamela Jett, addresses all of these competencies in a comprehensive 150-minute session designed for executive-level professionals.
Assertive communication is the ability to express thoughts, feelings, needs, and perspectives directly, honestly, and confidently—while respecting the rights and viewpoints of others. It sits between the two dysfunctional extremes: passive communication (withholding views, deferring excessively, avoiding conflict) and aggressive communication (dominating, dismissing, or demeaning others). For leaders, assertive communication is essential because it establishes clear expectations, enables honest feedback, resolves conflict constructively, and models the communication standard the entire organization will follow. Leaders who communicate passively create ambiguity, enable performance problems to fester, and lose credibility with their teams. Leaders who communicate aggressively damage trust, suppress innovation (people stop speaking up when they fear judgment or attack), and create toxic cultures that drive talent away. Assertive leaders can deliver difficult messages with both clarity and respect—a combination that earns genuine trust and followership over time. Pamela Jett's Communication Skills Master Class at Aurora Training Advantage covers assertive communication with practical frameworks, including specific language patterns leaders can use in challenging situations such as conflict, performance discussions, and high-stakes presentations.
Psychological safety—the belief that one can speak up with ideas, questions, concerns, or mistakes without fear of punishment or humiliation—is one of the strongest predictors of team performance, innovation, and learning. Leaders create or destroy psychological safety primarily through their communication behavior. Specific language choices matter enormously: leaders who respond to mistakes or bad news with blame or sarcasm train their teams to hide problems; leaders who respond with curiosity and problem-solving orientation create an environment where people surface issues early when they're still manageable. Asking genuine questions (not rhetorical ones that imply the answer) and listening without interrupting signals that others' perspectives are valued. Acknowledging when you don't have all the answers, or when someone else's idea is better than yours, models intellectual humility. Noticing and correcting communication patterns that exclude or dismiss—such as talking over certain people or only soliciting input from familiar voices—broadens psychological safety across the whole team. Aurora Training Advantage's Communication Skills Master Class, presented by Pamela Jett, covers the specific words to choose and the habits to eliminate in order to consistently build psychological safety as a leader.
Power questions are open-ended, thought-provoking questions that are specifically designed to shift thinking, unlock new perspectives, and drive better problem-solving rather than simply gather information. Unlike closed questions (which elicit a yes/no response) or leading questions (which suggest the desired answer), power questions invite the respondent to reflect deeply and generate their own insights. For leaders, the ability to ask powerful questions is transformative: it develops direct reports' thinking and autonomy rather than creating dependency on the leader for answers, which builds organizational capability over time. In coaching conversations, questions like 'What would you do if you knew you couldn't fail?' or 'What options haven't we considered yet?' open up creative problem-solving. In conflict situations, questions like 'Help me understand your perspective' reduce defensiveness and enable dialogue. In strategic discussions, questions like 'What assumptions are we making that might not be true?' challenge groupthink. Power questions also demonstrate active engagement and respect, which strengthens relationships. Pamela Jett dedicates a full module of Aurora Training Advantage's Communication Skills Master Class to developing and deploying power questions effectively across leadership contexts.
Relentlessly Positive communication, a framework developed by communication expert Pamela Jett, is built on the principle that leaders who consistently choose constructive, affirming communication approaches—even in difficult situations—produce dramatically better results in feedback delivery, difficult conversations, motivation, and team culture. While the full framework is covered in Aurora Training Advantage's Communication Skills Master Class, the three keys center on intention, language, and behavior. The first key is intentionality: choosing in advance to approach every communication situation with a constructive intent—seeking understanding and solutions rather than winning or proving a point. The second key involves specific language choices—using words that open dialogue rather than close it, that describe behaviors rather than attack character, and that acknowledge complexity rather than oversimplify. The third key is consistent behavioral follow-through—practicing these communication habits regularly enough that they become automatic, especially under pressure when regressing to more reactive patterns is tempting. Together these three keys help leaders navigate difficult conversations, give corrective feedback, and motivate performance with a communication approach that builds rather than damages relationships and organizational culture.
