She talks so fast it is hard to keep up and take notes. I understand and she stated she knows she talks fast, etc. I also understand that she wants to squeeze a lot info into her segment. Knowing this I think she should also handout a transcription of her whole webinar. I think all of her information was good, relevant, useful, etc. But if I can not go back and review AND understand, then its pointless to print handout or take notes. But again, like she said, she knows this about herself so she take extra steps to provide better handouts for later reference.

Frequently Asked Questions
Leadership presence is the quality that enables a leader to command attention, inspire confidence, and influence others—even before speaking a word. It encompasses authentic communication, emotional intelligence, executive gravitas, and consistent behavior under pressure. Leadership presence matters profoundly for career advancement because it shapes how others perceive and respond to a leader in high-stakes moments: job interviews, executive presentations, crisis situations, and cross-functional negotiations. Professionals with strong leadership presence are more likely to be seen as ready for greater responsibility, trusted with critical assignments, and invited into senior strategic conversations. Importantly, leadership presence is not an innate trait reserved for extroverts or natural performers—it is a learnable set of skills that can be deliberately developed through self-awareness, practice, and feedback. Organizations increasingly recognize leadership presence as a differentiating competency at every level, from emerging managers to C-suite executives seeking to amplify their organizational impact.
Authentic leadership begins with deep self-awareness: understanding your core values, natural strengths, communication preferences, and areas for development. Rather than imitating other leaders, authenticity means leveraging who you genuinely are—your unique perspective, experiences, and voice—to connect meaningfully with teams and stakeholders. Practical steps include soliciting candid 360-degree feedback to identify gaps between self-perception and how others experience you, reflecting regularly on whether your behaviors align with your stated values, and experimenting with new approaches in lower-stakes situations before applying them more broadly. Storytelling is a particularly powerful tool for authentic leaders, as personal narratives create emotional connection and demonstrate vulnerability in a way formal authority cannot. Coaching and mentorship from leaders whose style you respect can accelerate development by providing both model behaviors and personalized feedback. Over time, consistent, values-aligned action solidifies an authentic leadership identity that others find genuinely compelling and trustworthy.
Research consistently shows that a significant portion of interpersonal communication is non-verbal—encompassing body language, eye contact, facial expressions, posture, gesture, and vocal quality. For leaders, non-verbal cues are particularly powerful because they often communicate more (or less) credibility than words alone. Strong leadership presence is conveyed through physical stillness and groundedness: balanced posture, purposeful movement, and open body orientation signal confidence and engagement. Sustained, warm eye contact during key messages conveys conviction and respect, while avoiding eye contact often reads as uncertainty or disengagement. Voice quality matters enormously: pace, volume, clarity, and the ability to pause effectively all influence whether a message lands with authority. Leaders who develop awareness of their non-verbal communication and practice intentional adjustments—especially under pressure, when nervous habits emerge—significantly enhance their overall leadership presence and persuasive impact with both peers and senior stakeholders.
Executive gravitas is the quality that makes a leader seem weighty, credible, and worthy of serious attention—the sense that when this person speaks, it is worth listening. It involves calm confidence, decisiveness, and substance that earns respect from peers, subordinates, and senior stakeholders alike. Gravitas is distinct from authority granted by title; it is earned through demonstrated competence, consistent composure under pressure, and the willingness to take clear positions on difficult issues. Emerging leaders can develop executive gravitas by preparing rigorously before high-visibility moments, developing a track record of following through on commitments, and practicing brevity and precision in communication—saying more with fewer words is a hallmark of gravitas. Managing emotional reactions professionally, especially during conflict or criticism, reinforces the perception of stability and reliability. Seeking feedback specifically on presence and gravitas from trusted mentors, and studying how highly regarded leaders in your organization carry themselves, accelerates development in this often-intangible but highly consequential leadership dimension.
Maintaining leadership presence under pressure is where the true test of a leader's development occurs. High-stress situations—organizational crises, difficult conversations, public criticism, or rapid change—trigger stress responses that can undermine presence: rushed speech, defensive body language, reactive decision-making, or emotional escalation. Developing the ability to manage these responses begins with physiological regulation: controlled breathing techniques can interrupt the stress response within seconds, restoring access to cognitive resources needed for clear thinking and measured communication. Mental preparation, including visualization of challenging scenarios and pre-planned responses to likely provocations, reduces the surprise factor that derails composure. Pausing before responding signals thoughtfulness rather than reactivity and gives the brain time to access its best thinking. Leaders with clear values and priorities find it easier to navigate ambiguity because they have internalized a decision-making framework that does not depend on external certainty. Continuous practice in progressively more challenging situations builds the composure that makes confident, present leadership increasingly natural.
