The future state map then redesigns the process by eliminating pure waste, minimizing necessary non-value activities through automation or simplification, and ensuring value-adding work flows smoothly without interruption. This might mean consolidating approval steps, implementing parallel processing instead of sequential handoffs, or co-locating team members who frequently collaborate.
A common misconception treats value stream mapping as a one-time documentation exercise. In practice, it establishes a baseline for continuous improvement. As changes are implemented, new maps reveal whether improvements delivered expected results or created new bottlenecks. Another pitfall involves mapping at too high a level, producing a diagram so abstract it fails to reveal specific improvement opportunities, or too detailed, drowning in minutiae that obscure the larger patterns of waste.
