Many times an employee who does an outstanding job in their role is promoted to supervisor. But being a supervisor is very different from being an individual contributor. You are now responsible for motivating, mentoring, and managing others. You have interpersonal issues to help resolve, training to provide, disciplinary problems to address. Many organizations don’t provide enough (or any) training for their new supervisors that would help them succeed in this new and more demanding role.
HR101 is designed to help you learn those things you need to know to make the transition from employee to supervisor. This course will help you understand the alphabet soup of employment laws and HR programs that you will now be responsible for administering, along with HR, including ADA, ADAAA, FMLA, STD, LTD, PIP, EEOC, etc. The goal of this course is to help you understand your responsibilities as a supervisor in complying with these laws and regulations.
Topics that will be covered:
- Legal interviewing: the importance of selecting employees based on skills and what you can and can’t ask a candidate.
- What is employment at will? What does this mean to you as a supervisor?
- Best practices in documenting performance. Is an annual review enough?
