Social engineering is a category of cyberattack that manipulates human psychology rather than exploiting technical vulnerabilities. Unlike traditional hacking that targets software weaknesses, social engineering exploits trust, authority, urgency, and fear to deceive individuals into disclosing credentials, transferring funds, or granting system access. The growth of remote and hybrid work has dramatically expanded shadow IT risk. Ransomware double extortion is an escalating cyberattack tactic in which attackers encrypt an organization's data and demand payment, while also threatening to publicly release stolen sensitive data unless a second ransom is paid. This dual pressure significantly increases leverage over victims — even organizations with solid backups must contend with the threat of data exposure. Protecting against double extortion requires a layered defense: regular offline data backups, network segmentation to limit lateral movement after an initial breach, strong endpoint security, and employee training on phishing and social engineering. Organizations should also develop and test an incident response plan and evaluate cyber insurance coverage for ransomware scenarios, as total recovery costs — including legal, notification, regulatory, and reputational expenses — can far exceed the ransom demand itself.
Deepfake technology uses artificial intelligence to create convincing synthetic audio, video, and images depicting real people saying or doing things they never did. In cybersecurity contexts, deepfakes are increasingly used in social engineering attacks — impersonating executives in video calls to authorize fraudulent wire transfers or generating synthetic voice recordings to deceive employees. Defense requires both organizational policy and individual awareness. Employees should be trained to recognize deepfake indicators and to apply healthy skepticism to any unexpected urgent request from a senior leader, regardless of how convincing the communication appears. Verification culture is the most reliable protection against this rapidly evolving threat.
Securing a remote work environment requires attention to both the devices used for work and the home network they connect through. Key best practices include using company-provided or IT-approved devices for all work activity, keeping operating systems and software fully updated, using a VPN when accessing corporate systems remotely, and enabling multi-factor authentication on all work accounts. Home routers should use strong unique passwords and WPA3 encryption with firmware regularly updated. Smart home and IoT devices should be isolated on a separate network segment from work devices wherever possible, since many consumer IoT products have weak security that could serve as entry points for attackers. Employees should remain especially vigilant about phishing and social engineering while working remotely, where the isolation of the home environment can reduce natural skepticism.
