Presentation went over the allotted time. I was disappointed about that because I had a commitment that kept me from staying longer. It would be best if presenters paced themselves so they can end on time without rushing towards the end. Seems to be the meat of the presentation was towards the end.

Frequently Asked Questions

Researchers have studied the psychology of persuasion for over 60 years, with Robert Cialdini's work identifying six universal principles that consistently influence people's decisions: reciprocity (people feel obligated to return favors), commitment and consistency (people align actions with stated positions), social proof (people follow the behavior of others they identify with), authority (people defer to credible experts), liking (people are more easily influenced by those they like), and scarcity (people value what is less available). Ethical application of these principles means using them to genuinely help people make decisions that serve their interests—not to manipulate. For example, demonstrating genuine expertise and sharing relevant case studies uses authority and social proof to help someone evaluate a decision more clearly. Julie Kowalski, an executive coach and facilitator with deep expertise in organizational persuasion, explains how professionals can apply all six principles constructively in Aurora Training Advantage's The Power of Influence and Persuasion webinar.
Effective persuaders understand that different people are moved by different types of appeals, and skilled influencers know how to deploy all three. The first is logos—logical appeal, which persuades through facts, data, evidence, and reasoned argument. The second is ethos—credibility appeal, which persuades through the speaker's demonstrated expertise, trustworthiness, and track record. The third is pathos—emotional appeal, which persuades by connecting the message to the audience's values, desires, fears, or aspirations. Most professionals default heavily to logos, presenting data and logic while underestimating the power of emotional resonance and personal credibility. Research shows that decision-making is rarely purely rational—emotions and social trust play dominant roles in how people process and act on information. Learning to read your audience and blend all three appeals in proportion to what each situation requires dramatically increases your ability to influence outcomes. Julie Kowalski covers all three appeal approaches in Aurora Training Advantage's The Power of Influence and Persuasion webinar.
Natural influence at work typically reflects a combination of skills and traits that can be deliberately developed: strong listening—influential people genuinely understand others' perspectives before attempting to shift them; credibility—they have demonstrated competence and follow-through that makes their input trusted; relationship investment—they have built goodwill with a wide range of colleagues over time; and communication clarity—they can articulate ideas and requests in compelling, accessible ways. People who lack natural influence often compensate with authority or persistence, both of which create resistance rather than buy-in. The good news is that influence is fundamentally a learnable skill set—it is the art and science of understanding what motivates people and how to frame requests, ideas, and decisions in ways that align with their values and interests. Julie Kowalski, a seasoned executive coach and thought leader, provides a structured approach to developing personal influence in Aurora Training Advantage's The Power of Influence and Persuasion webinar.
Understanding why people say yes—the psychological mechanisms that move someone from consideration to commitment—is foundational to effective influence. Research shows that decisions are rarely made through purely rational cost-benefit analysis; they are shaped by cognitive shortcuts, social norms, emotional associations, and trust. People are more likely to say yes when a request is framed consistently with their past commitments, when the person asking is someone they like and trust, when they perceive that others in similar situations have agreed, and when there is a sense of genuine reciprocity in the relationship. Small, intentional changes in how a request is framed—the order of information presented, the specific words used, the context in which the conversation happens—can produce dramatically different outcomes. This knowledge allows professionals to influence more effectively without relying on pressure or manipulation. Julie Kowalski translates decades of persuasion research into practical workplace applications in Aurora Training Advantage's The Power of Influence and Persuasion webinar.
Getting buy-in from leadership for new ideas, initiatives, or budget requests requires a sophisticated approach to influence that goes beyond simply presenting a good idea. Successful influencers first invest time understanding what the decision-maker cares about most—their strategic priorities, risk tolerance, and communication preferences—and frame their proposal in those terms. Establishing credibility through relevant prior success, external data, or expert endorsement strengthens the ethos foundation of the pitch. Building coalition support before the formal conversation—so that the decision-maker hears positive signals from trusted colleagues—leverages social proof and consistency principles. Anticipating objections and preparing thoughtful responses transforms resistance into engagement. Timing matters too: presenting during a period of strategic openness is far more effective than fighting an entrenched agenda. Julie Kowalski provides a complete framework for influencing upward and across organizational levels in Aurora Training Advantage's The Power of Influence and Persuasion webinar.
